Yesterday I put up a post about Mail Me Art. Today I’ve finally gotten off my bum and printed the illustration I’m sending. The envelope is longer than a standard A4 so the printer was choking a bit, but that ahem, adds to it’s offset look. Now to the post office to buy some stamps (can’t remember the last time I had to do that).

Mail Me Art has been running for a couple of years and there is still a chance for you to submit a piece of work before 31st of January 2010. The site is run by Darren Di Lieto and the idea is that you can create a design or illustration on an envelope, any size and send it to Darren. At the end of each month there will be a signed copy of the book, Mail Me Art: Going Postal with the World’s Best Illustrators and Designers, plus an art-related prize given away to favourite submission of the month.

There is also a possibility that your artwork could go forward to an exhibition with artists receiving 70% from the sale of their mail art. If I get my act together I hope to send in my own entry by the end of the week.

Hi everyone, Happy New Year! Let’s hope it’s a peaceful, healthy and prosperous year. I’ve been offline for most of Christmas and it’s been nice to recharge the batteries. I’ve been doing a bit of photography, a bit of drawing and a lot of lazing around and eating bad stuff but it’s time to get back on track. I haven’t really made any resolutions as I generally start falling off the resolution wagon fairly early in the new year anyway, but there are parts of my working life that I want to make some changes in. Teaching design is my main bread and butter and thankfully is a steady job for me. I’ll also be continuing to write for the Sitepoint design blog which I’m very pleased about too.

This year what I really want to gain more work in is illustration. I’ve been trying to develop my style of illustration over the past year. Like most designers I love trying new things so in some ways having one style can feel limiting, that’s why my portfolio is quite a mixed bag, but this year is about perservering and getting to the point where I feel comfortable with a recognizable style because naturally enough clients like to know what they’re getting when they hire someone for design and illustration. I’m going to contact some agents to see if I can get representation so I’ll let you know how that’s going. So that, in a way, is my resolution but it’s something I’ve been aiming at for a good while now, I just haven’t been focused enough.

Have you made any design or career resolutions or decisions for 2010?

To tie in with the release of the animated movie “Up”, Pixar have released a number of beautiful retro style posters by various designers and artists. They are truly a feast for the eyes, and I feel a retro personal project coming on. There just aren’t enough hours in the day at the moment. Or at least enough hours that I can stay awake for. In the meantime I’ll add these to the inspiration pile.

These are some posters I designed under the massively loose title of “Physics”. I did a degree in Applied Science – Physics and I.T. I went on to study design later, but when I was doing Physics I really struggled as I’m fairly useless at maths. However I did like the concepts and the diagrams – I always had nice diagrams in my notes, even if I didn’t have a clue what they meant!

These posters were inspired by a dip into one of my old physics books I found at my parents house on top of the wardrobe. The diagrams in the book were mostly line art, but I wanted to take them and make something retro, with a focus on colours, texture (there’s a couple of scanned jumpers in there), shapes and typography. They’re A3 sized.

I have a lot of posters that I’ve designed and am looking back over and I’m going to start putting them out for sale throught this website. Not really sure what service to use for getting them printed, what do you guys use? Does anyone use services like Zazzle and Imagekind for printing and delivering? I’d love to hear how you’ve sold prints and posters through your websites.
